Medical Terms (Part I)

This are the list of basic Medical Terminologies.

Apnea – Absence or cessation of breathing
Auscultation – Listening to body sounds with the use of stethoscope
Bradycardia – Slow pulse rate; below 60 bpm
Bradypnea – Slow breathing; less than 12 breath per minute
Diastolic Pressure – Pressure of blood druing ventricular relaxation
Dorsal or supine position – Back lying postion
Dysnea – Difficult and labored respiration
Eupnea – Normal breathing
Fowler’s Position – head of bead is elevated at different angles
Genupectoral or knee – chest position – Kneeling position with torso at 90 degree angle to hips
Hyperpyrexia – Very high fever, temepature is 41C
Hypertension – High blood pressure; over 140 mmHg systolic pressure and /or above 90mmHg diastolicpressure for atleast 2 readings, 30 days apart
Hyperventilation – Deep, rapid respiration. Also caaled Kussmaul’s breathing
Hypotension – Low blood pressure; systolic pressure below 100mmHg or diastolic pressure below 60mmHg
Hypothermia – Subnormal or low body temperature
Hypoventilation – Slow, shallow respiration
Inspection – Assessing by using the sense of sight
Lateral position – Side-lying position
Lithotomy position – Lying position with legs supported in stirrups at 90 degree angle
Normotension – Is normal blood pressure
Oligopnea – Shallow respiration, rate is not affected
Orthopnea – Difficulty of breathing in supine or lying position, relieved by upright or sitting position
Overweight – The weight of the person is 10% greater than the ideal body weight
Palpation – Examining the body by using the sense of touch
Percussion – Tapping body to produce sounds
Polypnea – Deep respiration, rate is not affected
Prone position – Abdomen – lying position
Pulse pressure – Is the difference between the systolic and the diastolic pressure
Pyrexia – Elevated body temperature
Sim’s position – Semi prone, side-lying position
Systolic Pressure – Pressure of blood during ventricular contraction
Tachycardia – Rapid pulse rate, above 100 bpm
Tachypnea – Rapid breathing; above 20 breaths per minute
Vital Signs – Also called the cardinal signs, are body temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, and blood pressure
